The journey of Udbhas

Originally began with a group of ladies who started working with the strayed children in the Rabindra Sarobar area out of sheer love and compassion to usher hope. These ladies used to come to drop their children in the schools near Rabindra Sarobar. Initially, they started teaching them informally sitting under trees, and their used to be no book, no writing material - it was all verbal in the form of storytelling.

Noticing such noble effort, some of the morning workers came forward to volunteer or to patronize. Many had joined after coming to know from word of mouth, about the benevolent activities. Eminent linguist, academic and polyglot Shri Jyotibhushan Chaki lend his whole hearted support and acted as a guardian.

A time came when number of students increased and conducting classes in open, particularly during monsoon became difficult. Hence, the classes of Udbhas was shifted to car park area of Income Tax Building, Dhakuria with their permission. Till date Udbhas continues to operate from the same place.

Presently, about 70 children between age of 5 and 18 are being taught up to School Final level. Beyond School level children are encouraged to pursue higher education in arts, science and technical disciplines, or vocational courses, and provided coaching facilities and financial support, on case to case basis. Placement are also being taken care to the extent possible.

Apart from teaching school curriculum, education comprises of drama, dance, music, art, painting, handicraft, basic computer courses, recitation, extempore lecture, hygiene, physical training, games, educational excursions, quiz, environmental consciousness, and moral & discipline in day to day life.

Basic healthcare of the children is being taken care. A free homoeopathy clinic twice a week is being run; Eye check-up and primary treatment camps are also conducted from time to time.

An annual exhibition of art & crafts, and science by the students is being held and the money raised from the exhibits is used to support some of its activities. Annual sports are also being conducted. Annual day is celebrated with drama, dance recitals, songs, and one act play performed by the students.

Students are taken to camp every year to instill self-reliance and for outdoor recreational activities.

A mission to educate and to provide basic amenities to the children hailing from economically weaker and marginalized section of the society, and to inspire them to successfully overcome the challenges to get included into main stream of the society.
